General workshop Faq

I’m interested in going for a workshop but have no background in calligraphy. Can I still attend the introduction class?

Yes, of course. Each beginners class is specifically tailored to complete beginners who have no experience. If you have some prior experience, please let the instructor know so that we’re able to tailor the learning experience to your skill level.

Does me being a left/right hander affect my suitability for this class?

Our classes are suited to both left and right handers alike, and the instructor will have experience teaching both left and right handers.

Is it easy to pick up calligraphy?

Yes! With proper instruction, students have no issues picking up the basics of calligraphy. It takes a bit of getting used to, but nothing that you can’t handle, I’m sure!

Will I need to prepare anything for the workshop?

All materials will be provided during the workshop. It is advised to wear darker coloured clothing to the workshop as we will be working with inks and pens.

Are the materials to be returned at the end of the class?

All materials are for participants to bring home at the end of the session.

What age groups are suitable to attend calligraphy classes?

Anyone and everyone, from children as young as 8 to more senior can enjoy calligraphy classes. It is a fun and relaxing activity which people of all ages can participate together.

Please note there may be a minimum age for some classes. If you are signing up for a child or are concerned about the age suitability, please enquire with us first.

What is the size of each in-person calligraphy class?

In-person class sizes are around 7 to 10 people per class to ensure that every student gets lots of one on one time with the instructor. If you’re interested in a private lesson, please drop me a note via my contact page.

Do you run any intermediate/flourishing workshops?

Yes I do, but due to my current workload I am only taking them on a by-request basis. Should you be interested in intermediate lessons, please drop me a note via my contact page.

Online workshop FAQ

Are online workshops as effective as in-person classes?

I believe there are definitely many upsides to online learning. For one, we’ve upped the lesson time to 5 hours, and spread it over two weekly sessions of 2.5 hours each to accommodate to online learning. This gives you time in between sessions to get a better feel of the tools, practice at your own pace, and come back the following week with any questions you may have.

A virtual classroom will also be set up for students, where class materials will be uploaded and students can communicate freely with the instructor. This includes learning aids such as digital versions of worksheets, scans of the instructor’s class notes and class summaries. Each session is also recorded, and the video will be uploaded so that students can rewatch it at their leisure. This means you get to watch and hear all the explanations in real time all over again!

Optional post-class tasks are also assigned after each session, and individualised feedback will be provided if they’re submitted.

What’s the class size for online workshops?

I cap each session at 7 participants to make sure that everyone has enough time together with me.

Are there additional shipping fees for the class kit?

There are no additional shipping fees for the class kit.

What do I need to prepare for the workshop?

If you’ve purchased a workshop ticket which includes the materials set, all the tools you’ll need are already inside! You just need to have access to a device (mobile, laptop, computer or tablet) that supports video calling as the class will be conducted through Zoom.

If you have your own tools, have your ink, pen and nib ready. The worksheet files will be made available to you digitally, so please print them out before class commences.

Do I have to leave my camera on all the time for the workshop?

It is not necessary to keep your camera on throughout. Feel free to turn it off if you feel more comfortable attending the class that way.

Can I request for an online private workshop?

Yes, you certainly can. Drop me an ask, or send me a DM via instagram @letteringinphosphenes
